A number of pooped people

About the only story that was not told election night concerned the fine pastries, black coffee (with schmetana, if you please), doughnuts and a number of pooped people.

Election night is the big night for news people, the clerk and his helpers and naturally the candidates.

The general picture is, everyone wants to know who got elected (or nominated as the case may be) and who didn't. Everyone agrees they don't want to know "after a while" . . . they want to know right now!

And who's to blame anyone.

So, as a result, it's a big, busy night.

The action started in Clerk Ed Harshbarger's office about 8:30 p.m., and continued until midnight. For a few people, it was a pencil-pushing rush-rush job . . . and brother, don't make any mistakes.

Courthouse folks and a few other contributors provided plenty of coffee and doughnuts. There also was a banana cake and that German chocolate cake, the same that Fred Oe'gen serves that causes the women to rave.

Vern Livingston, manager of City Utilities, tells the story about the fisherman who tied a worm on a line, dropped the line in the water and watched as a fish took his bait. He was repeating the baiting operation when an onlooker suggested the fisherman put a hook on the line.

"No suh," said the fisherman, "today ah is building confidence . . . tomorrow, I put the hook on."

Don't fret too much about your water bill. Just go right ahead and keep that lawn soaked, because the cost won't be what you may think. The minimum rate is $1.25 for 2,250 gallons of water and the price is lower as more water is used, according to Mr. Livingston.
