A good carpool entertainer

So long kids . . . until next year.

We have been in a car pool to Senior High along with four other families and each morning some brave parent puts on a coat of smiles and makes several stops.

All our passengers are girls.

The pool was organized alphabetically, Beaumont, (Wayne) Brown, (Paul) Holliway, (Jerry) Regler and (Russ) Seals.

It's been an interesting experience.

For example, did you ever try to crack a funny to six sleepy-eyed girls shortly after 7 a.m.? (Band parents and kids are early riser.)

I've tried to be a good carpool entertainer. I'm in my best voice in the morning, but the girls never really seemed tc jump with joy. So, once in a while just for fun, I'd change the radio dial from "mighty twelve-ninety" to some western music.

. . . that always went over big . . . a bit on the y-u-c-k-y side, they indicated.

Congratulations to the valedictorians and salutatorians, Tom Hanks, Alan Bonebrake, Senior High and Mike Wirth and Herbert Detloff, Lourdes.

Aldean Grundman, the News-Press circulation manager, has been pretty busy lately with a contest for his 25 or so carriers. And he was especially pleased when the winner was decided.

Don Gross, son of the Rev. and Mrs. George Gross, won the bike and was also recognized at Junior High for being in the upper 10 percent scholastically at the honors convocation.

The story and picture on the contest appear on Page 1 today.

Bob Swinney, who heads the Holmes-Legion baseballers this year, said a speaker system is needed at Steinhart park to bring the baseball games up to date.

He said in other communities there is even a special flag ceremony before the start of the games.

Bob will experience poor attendance at Steinhart park this year and not because of the win and loss column.

I enjoy baseball, but not when spectators are covered with clouds of dust everytime a car passes by the ball park . . . still say it wouldn't take much to at least get the asphalt or concrete surfacing started. Betcha a planning commission study would show that driving lane as one of the most heaviest traveled.

Steinhart park may not be as busy a place as it has been in past years this summer.

The new Wildwood Addition west of Steinhart, affords picknickers lots of space and there is new playground equipment for the children.

Steinhart will still be busy what with golf, baseball and swimming . . . yes swimming. The pool will be in operation again this summer.

And possibly longer.

Voters will decided June 10 on whether the City shall issue a maximum $225,000 in bonds for a new swimming pool at the park.

I've heard a few who want a year-around pool, say they will vote against the proposal unless there are provisions for closing it in for year-around use.

I hope not. We need a new pool.

It was with a great deal of regret that the Board of Education released Harvey Bettenhausen from his contract so he could accept a similar position at Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Mr. Bettenhausen has been a compliment to the school system.

He has been most courteous and cooperative with us on daily visits to the high school and we certainly will miss his friendly greeting.

We send along our best wishes and much success to the Bettenhausens.

The fight between Floyd Miller and his bosses, the State Board of Education, has been about the best reading material in the state for some time.

I can't get all riled up over the possible firing of Mr. Miller. Neither can I accept the pledge of school administrators not to apply for the job when Miller is fired.

Someone will apply for the job if and when. And hopefully that person will be well qualified to administer over the affairs of our children.

We elected the state board to run the education department and like Harry Truman says, "If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen."

That ought to apply to the "faction" school board members and also to Mr. Miller.

Let's get on with the classes.
