The abominable cavity

The Tarkio College booster float which appeared in the first annual Apple Bowl parade in Nebraska City has stirred authorities at the college.

The picture was printed on Page 1 of the News-Press on September 21. One of the signs on the float was labeled as something other than good taste. Tarkio College authorities agreed.

Congratulations to Mrs. Don McGaffey and the Senior High staff for conducting a fine Career Conference the other night in Nebraska City.

One consultant said he was surprised by the interest in his field; others said they were more than pleased with the reception.

Ron Ballou, Nebraska City's Chamber manager, gave a fine talk on the job potential in Nebraska City. His job includes "selling" Nebraska City and he did a good job with his presentation.

This young man appeared before de judge (mebbe it was Judge Stanley) on a complaint charging him with catching over-the-limit in bass.

"How do you plead?" the judge asked.

"Why guilty, of course, your honor," came the reply from the man with a smile on his face.

"Ten dollars and costs," the judge ordered. "Now, wipe that smile off your face."

"Thank you judge. I apologize. Now, may I have several copies of the court record to show friends?"

The best one I've heard about white grub worms came from Paul J. Niemann.

"They don't get into my lawn. They break off their teeth on that zoysia grass."

Earl Ahern, who is associated with the State Employment service, stopped in Nebraska City the other day to meet with Chuck Neerman, manager of the state office here.

Earl is a longtime friend. We rented living quarters in the home of a retired deputy sheriff in Fairbury where Earl was associated with a state office and I was going to junior college in 1948.

Someone told me the other day that he lost his luncheon partner and had to pay for his own meal when his friend pulled a 23 skiddoo to another table where there were some ladies-in-waitin . . . at least that's what Dick did at the Lodge, Bill said.

Perhaps you read the story the other day about Larry Naviaux, the popular and successful football coach at Boston University.

He is a cousin of the Naviaux family of Nebraska City.

From the Jefferson County Hospital, Little Magazine:

When teenagers dance nowadays, they don't talk, don't touch, don't even look at each other. It's like being married for 50 years.

Orman Paddock won't agree with that!

A small boy was asked to write what he had learned about the human body in his hygiene class.

He wrote:

"Our body is divided into three parts — the branium, the borax and the abominable cavity. The branium contains the brain, if any. The borax contain t h e lungs, lights and heart.

The abominable cavity contains the bowels of which there are five — a, e, i, o and u."
