It was no surprise to us to read in Omaha and Lincoln papers that Nebraska City Lourdes was rated state D champions in football.
You read that in the News-Press a week ago direct from our Super Polls at the beauty salons.
Well, now we can report that the Knights of Columbus are seeking permission and some help to erect some special signs designating the Knights as state champions.
Bill Olmer, grand knight, said the council hopes to erect the signs at the entrances to Nebraska City. The signs will be made of wood and brightly painted.
The KCs have asked permission from the Lions to place a sign in the park near the river bridge and Pete Lutz welcomed a sign on his farm north of town on U.S. 75. You'll hear more about this later.
We checked it out and we can report . . . that people are driving slower.
We found on a roundtrip to Lincoln the other afternoon that few cars and no trucks passed us as we wheeled at 50-55 m.p.h. We didn't look at the time of travel, but we found that the slower speed was okay. It was disturbing when someone did pass us and splattered sloppy crud from the highway onto the windshield.
The radio in our car is on the blink, so the Queen Bee got serenaded. And since I am such an expert in the vocal field, I want everyone to know that she slept all the way home.
I don't know whether it was my Bing Crosby tone or my Dracula imitations, but either way, she konked out until we stopped at the traffic light at Eleventh Street and Fourth Corso.
Sidney, Ia., is the town that has the nationally famous American Legion sponsored rodeo.
It's also a town that has its special people . . . Dave West, editor of the Argus-Herald, tells about the displays at a local cafe in his column, "It Takes All Kinds:"
"Jack Harvey has been doing all right in Iowa as proprietor of the Roundup Cafe here, but we think he left his heart in Texas. We were looking around in his cafe one day, while dawdling over a cup of the hot, and were surprised to note how many evidences of Texas memories Jack has around the place. There was a long, green vegetable labeled "Texas cucumber" stretching about six feet along a shelf, a stuffed horned owl, an enormous "Texas flyswatter," a ceramic longhorn steer and horned red bull, as well as the biggest Zippo-type lighter we've ever seen up on one of the shelves.
A Thanksgiving every year.
Thanks to Tom and Mickey Weathers and their two daughters for the Thanksgiving dinner. Mrs. Weathers if from Germany and we looked forward to the specialites.
And, after Tom and me showed the gals we are mighty good on the guitars with pop, rock and you-name-it-in-a-C-chord, we got seconds and too much more after that.
The worst part was sitting around the table after the meal, but then we showed the gals a couple tricks in bridge . . . snicker, snicker.
Mrs. Weathers dug out her husband's yearbooks from Doane college and showed my wife a picture of a dashing looking G.I. freshman. (I didn't mind it until the kids started laughing at my picture.)
We got started thumbing through several yearbooks . . . the Lyon boys from Brock were athletes, Clark Marshall from Avoca was in my history class and there was smilin' Lynn Handy from Percival, Iowa.
We also learned the fullname of the Rev. C. G. Nienkamp, pastor of the Bethel United Church of Christ in Nebraska City.
He is Christian Gary Nienkamp and he had a crew-cut when he was in college, too. Pastor Nienkamp is from Genoa, Ohio. We understand that Bill and Bob Nienkamp who were also in one of the yearbooks are brothers.
Whatever happened to the legs?
Okay guys, let's get together on this . . . the gals look sharp in their pantsuits, but whatever happened to the leggy legs?
I mean, the gals aren't working in defense plants riveting ships or welding tanks, but they've been dressing like they were going First Class to combine the beans or plow on the North 40.
I was looking over my list of Christmas gift ideas the other day for the females in my family and came up with new ideas:
Like . . . a John Deere 4020 . . . a railroader's overalls and a polka dot cap.
Hey, guys. This isn't so funny.
Do you have boots? Betcha the wifey has some, too.
How about a sweat shirt? Gotcha there, don't I? Betcha she's got at least three.
Remember your wide leather belt? Has she cut holes in it and drawn it up around her waist through the loops of your old bluejeans that are now "cutoffs?"
Let's organize! "Guys for Gams."
