Congratulations in order

Ivan D.E. Beaumont.

Congratulations

Cheryl Gigstad, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. A.O. Gigstad, on being selected to the state FFA chorus; and to Scott Simms, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Simms, on being the only Twin Rivers Conference basketball player on the south squad for the Nebraska Coaches Association game.

We'd like to join with others in congratulating Mr. and Mrs. Allen Madsen, Nehawka, on being selected as the Farm Bureau family of the year.

Mr. Barton goes to D.C.

A telephone call from Rep. Charles Thone gave us a hint something good was going to happen to John Barton, American Government teacher at Senior High.

Mr. Barton has been selected as a teacher-chaperone in the congressman's intern program. Ten students will make the trip and we are assured they will be pooped.

Brian Browning, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Browning, Peru, attended a couple of years ago and gave us a full report on his activities. They were hectic to say the least and Brian and his group loved it.

And more names

Carolyn Buell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merlyn Buell, Murdock, who was named 1977 Capitol Pork Producers queen is really a "home" girl. The Buell family farmed in this area for many years and the children were active in 4-H clubs. (So were Mom and Dad, too.)

Carolyn will be a fine representative for the Pork Producers. Among her duties will be handing out awards and posing for pictures at county fairs.

There was another teen-ager in the news. Teresa Sweeney, daughter of ex-Navy Chief and Mrs. Bill Sweeney, was selected as a finalist in the 1977 Miss Nebraska National Teen-Age Pageant June 10-11-12 at Seward.

Teresa will compete for scholarships, a number of prizes and a paid trip to the contest in Atlanta, Ga. She is sponsored by Otoe County National Bank.

A straight line

Sam Kellogg, Jr., can tell you an experience of flying to Boise, Idaho, by way of Los Angeles.

The spring snowstorm a couple weeks ago shut off west road traffic, but the airlines were operating. Sam thought he would make the plane stop at Denver, but because of the storm, the flight went to Los Angeles for an hour and a half layover, then to San Francisco and then to Boise.

That straight line flight had a couple of curves in it, but as Sam explained, the whole trip was still only about three hours late.

Arbor Day

April 23-24 will be big days again this year in Nebraska City. The Arbor Day Foundation awards will be presented on the first day and the parade, fly-in, tree planting and formal ceremony at the mansion will be held Sunday.

Jim Olsen is chairman of the celebration this year and he is working with number of other committees. It gets pretty old trying to do a better job each year with the ceremony, but that's what is attempted each year. The committees must be successful because the celebrations are well attended.

The parade numbers will be fewer this year. The Shriners will not be here in force as usual. Arbor Day falls on the same day as the Shrine circus in Omaha. However, a number of Omaha Shriners are expected to make the trip to join the local Scimitar three-wheel and Model T firetruck paraders.

Shrine Bowl

A lot of sports fans are awaiting anxiously for word from Shrine Bowl headquarters on selection of players for word from Shrine Bowl headquarters on selection of players for the August game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

If you're not familiar with the program, Shriners in Nebraska sponsor a bowl game pitting the best high school senior football players in the state in a North vs. South game.

Proceeds go to the Shrine's Crippled Children's hospital in Minneapolis.

Bobby Reynolds, the razzle-dazzle cross-field runner of the 1950's for the Huskers, is in charge of the Shrine Bowl. He is expected to make some announcements soon.

Meanwhile we have an unofficial report:

"Dandy" Randy Landwehr, an all-stater from Nebraska City Senior High, will be tapped to join the South squad. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Landwehr.

Thanks to Dick Schmidt . . . for the rhubarb and plum "refreshments" the other night after the rescue-spaghetti dinner. Now all I'm lacking is a glass of dandelion wine to claim that I've tasted 'em all.

Dick said he started with a wine kit, but now has another "system" or whatever. The private stock was dry and good.
