The Dunbar Review
The fight fan went to work the next day with bandages on his ears. The guys at the shop asked what happened.
"Well, it's like this," George said. "I was watching that TV show on the fight between Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier and my wife was standing nearby doing the ironing. She left for a moment and right in the middle of the seventh round, the blamed phone rang. I grabbed the hot iron and put it to my ear, thinking I had the phone in my hand."
"But what happened to the other ear?" the men asked.
"I hadn't any more than hung up when the guy called again."
The Eagles dinner
When the gals at the Eagles lodge put steaks on the stove they didn't realize how much their cooking was appreciated. Over 400 Eagles and guests showed up for the dinner.
So we don't miss anyone, everything was good, the salad, the potatoes, the coffee and oh, yes . . . thanks Linda and Judy for those de-e-e-licious buns and butter.
The Eagles auxiliary did all the work. Special guests were rescue squadsmen and their spouses. The Eagles have hosted the squadsmen every year at a dinner party and this year they tossed in Don Kennell and the Western Spirits.
It was great. It was too much, but we all enjoyed it.
Congratulations
. to Kathy Glover, Chuck Ramold, Dave Patton and Steve Guthals on their FFA awards. Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Glover, Mr. and Mrs. Don Ramold, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Patton and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Guthals.
With the end of the school term rapidly approaching, we hope there will be a whole lot of other students to be recognized for their accomplishments.
The Optimist magazine tells about a woman from northern Wisconsin who has an amazing collection of cacti, each one a beautiful specimen.
A friend asked how she managed to be so successful in caring for them.
"It's simple," she replied. "I bought the first cactus plant in El Paso, Tex., so I subscribed to the El Paso newspaper and whenever I read that it has rained there, I water my plants."
Good luck to Judy
Mrs. Judith Huebner, the News-Press circulation manager for a year and a half, has resigned to become a circulation supervisor for the Lincoln Journal.
We wish Judy good luck in her new work. She has four growing and active children and she has been a busy mother and worker. She will continue to reside in her hometown, Nebraska City. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Arthur.
The circulation manager at the News-Press has one of the most interesting assignments โ teach boys and girls how to run a business.
We depend heavily on the U.S. Postal Service and our mail customers, but our carriers are trained as Little Merchants. We wholesale papers to them ano they retail them.
Each carrier runs his own business, has a bond-savings account, conducts sales campaigns directed by the circulation department and is responsible to his customers. We think it's good experience for the boys and girls. We'd all probably be surprised if we knew how many bikes, room furniture, games and other things were bought with the profits of the carrier boys and girls.
We're pretty proud of our Little Merchants.
Tearing up the track
That crunch-crunch you've been hearing is the heavy equipment tearing up Hayward park to make room for a new grade school.
Much of the sod has already been stripped, the asphalt torn up and next will come the bleachers. The football field will be moved to a site next to Senior High.
Meanwhile, a track of some sorts has been built at the high school and the athletes (boys and girls) are going through their practice events "on dirt," we heard a couple say. Wasn't too long ago that dirt or cinder was the track.
The plaque
The Wormy Applewood Plaque goes this week to Alan King's television show which pointed out all the negative things in life.
Up to this point in life we were convinced life insurance was for retirement in golden years. Now, Mr. King has convinced us that the "survivors" are the widows and they're on the dance floors in Europe whooping it up.
For his negative approach to life โ we suggest kerosene for his gas tank โ we award our famous plaque. (The worm is pregnant.)
Next week. The male menopause, or if you don't use it, you'll lose it.
