Congratulations
. . . to Cheryl Blakeman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Blakeman, on her selection to the All Tournament Team at the Twin Rivers Conference volleyball meet.
We've been attending a number of the girls games and have found a growing spectator interest in the sport. Coach Vicki Wilken and her high schoolers have been doing a good job for the sport and for fans.
The Dunbar Review
The newlyweds had just settled down into their honeymoon suite after arriving at the resort.
The bridegroom, wanting to make an early showing of his young executive image, said: "Honey, now that we're married, I believe we should have a good understanding between each other, and we should decide right now which of us is president and which is the vice president."
The cute little thing rolled her eyes, looked up to him and said, "Oh, that's no problem, darling. You can be both the president and vice president. I'll be the treasurer."
A new sound
Congratulations to Dave Messing and the KNCY company for installing stereo FM at the Nebraska City radio station. Grand opening for the new facility was held Saturday.
We join with the community in welcoming the addition to an existing business. Too often we fail to recognize expansion of our local businesses and industries.
Congrats Dave, Cope and the radio gang. We're enjoying your new sound . . . especially in country music.
The football contest
Thanks to neighbor, Mrs. Fred Wusk, for helping us judge the football contest which is printed each week in the News-Press.
The contest was delayed a couple of days because of rained out games and when the last game was played Monday night, that happened to be the night that my helper decided to try some more of those homemade hostess-like cupcakes.
So, rather than fuss . . . I went next door and offered Lucille wages of fresh coffee and homemade cupcakes and a bonus of Bing Crosby's 50th year TV show, if she'd help me with the contest . . . how could she refuse?
The Fenske report
George was driving one day in the Paul community when he spotted a farmer plowing with a bull, and this despite the fact there was a tractor in the barnyard.
When man and beast came to the end of a row, George recognized Bob Kreifels and called to him.
"Hey, Bob. Why are you plowing with a bull when you've got that big diesel tractor?"
Bob and beast snorted and Bob answered: "I know what I'm doing."
"Well, what are you doing?" the inquisitive Review reporter asked.
"I'm teaching this critter there's something to life besides romance."
New at Peru
Groundbreaking for the new health and phys ed center at Peru State will be November 5 at 12.30 p.m. The completed project will cost an estimated $2.3 million.
The new facility didn't come easy. There was a lot of groundwork laid before that appropriations was approved. Sen. Calvin Carsten, Avoca, deserves much of the credit for his dedication to getting the approval from the legislature. He had help from Peru Boosters, but he did the political engineering.
Peru will play Northwestern College in a football game at 2 p.m. and Saturday night there will be a performance of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra.
It promises to be a bright day among the oaks.
Flip your hands
Despite the confusion printed in newspapers and reported on television about the change back to Central Standard time, it takes place today, Sunday, October 30.
The easy way is to set the hands of the clock back one hour when you hit the pad Saturday night . . . always seems like you get something extra out of the change.
We'll flip ahead an hour next spring.
Football in 1937
The Nebraska City Pioneers took it on the chin several times in football games during 1937. In one game that they lost it felt like a win with only seven points scored against them.
Jack Ryder, sophomore end for NCHS, got his teammates down to the 15 yard line twice during the game but the Peru Bobkittens closed the gap and then turned on the offense.
Jim Polston (1530 No. 11th) flipped the ball to his end, Grafton, for 28 yards and a score. Fischer, plunged and that's all she wrote. Peru 7, NCHS 0.
The News-Press story cited the speedy Polston . . .
"Polston, one of the best backs in the Southeast district this year, led the Peru attack with his running, passing and punting."
Ole Jim says he doesn't do much running these days.
