That old Buick . . .
Old car, new kids
We liked that picture in the paper the other day of Woody Kreifels' son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Kreifels. The pictured showed the newlyweds dressed in clothing of the 1930's and seated on the fenders of their 1939 Buick.
Wondered what Jim ever did with that old Buick. Glad to see the New Breed likes some of the oldies.
The pledges
We've been printing a number of the names of area students who have pledged to fraternities and sororities at schools. If we've missed your son or daughter it's because we haven't received word from the college houses. Please give us a call.
So long, Mrs. Duffey
The story on Page 1 today tells it. Mrs. Duffey is retiring. She has been society editor of the News-Press for 22 years.
Her successor is our very own and capable Sue Quinlan. We are pleased that Sue has been moved into the editor's job but we will miss "Mrs. Duffey."
She was convinced by her family that she had worked long enough. It was a difficult decision for someone as dedicated to the News-Press as our Mrs. Duffey.
She told me that she was going to write a book — about me. That's a nice compliment, and then she told me the subject matter of the book — the male menopause and sympathy pains.
Go ahead. Mrs. Duffey, write all that stuff I told you about noon headaches, hot flashes and stomach pains and I'll make you so famous that Dr. Spock and Dr. Joyce Brothers will want autographed books and the Rev. Norman Vincent Peale will ask you to address his congregations.
Congratulations
. . . to Lori Ruth and Dallas Byers, the homecoming queen and king at the Sidney, Ia., high school. They are the daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. Chet Ruth and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Byers.
I remember Lori. She played on the Percival girls softball team.
Cinda
The picture in the paper the other day told the story.
Cinda Abbott is growing up. The nine year old is the daughter of Mrs. Gail Abbott and the late Sgt. Guy Abbott.
We met Cinda a number of years ago. She was pictured on Page 1 on Memorial Day. Her father had been killed in Vietnam. He would have been proud of his growing young lady.
OPPD meeting
The meeting last week by the Omaha Public Power District board at the Nebraska City Power station is the first time — if memory is correct — that the board has held its regular meeting outside the electric building in Omaha.
The purpose of the trip to Nebraska City was a first hand report to the board on the $400 million (still can't get used to figures that large) power plant nearing completion.
That's supposed to be fired up in a few months. And the good news is that a second plant is on the drawing board.
The Chest
Your dollars are needed for the Community Chest. Team captains are making the rounds in Nebraska City asking for donations in the annual drive.
The money goes to the good guys (whoops, gals too) in the Red Cross, Arthritis Foundation, scouts and several other agencies.
You've backed the campaign with dollars in previous years and the Chest board is hoping you'll do it again.
Co-chairmen are Janet Rogers and John Swoyer. Give them your help.
