A diehard Big Red fan

What does dad know?

Good ole' dad.

Didya hear the one about the grade schooler who returned from class with a note from his teacher?

The note suggested that little Johnny get some instruction in his math.

"What's the matter, son?" the father asked. "Didn't I help you?"

"Yes, dad," the little fellow replied, "But the teacher said the answer to the question 'what is $5 million dollars' isn't 'that's a helluva lot'."

Happy birthday

to Mrs. [illegible], 705 North Sixth Street. Her birthday is September 21. Her age? Well, most women will say "that's none of your business," so we'll just say she's over 39, spry and peppy.

Rescue call

We watched with interest Saturday as the rescue squadsmen took care of a number of sports fans at the football game.

Glen Davidson, Syracuse, who has been helping with the rescue duties at the stadium for over 10 years during the football season, assisted with a half dozen or so calls during the game. The heat was too much for some of the fans and for one fan, there was a second call.

That's what we call a diehard Big Red fan.

Congratulations

to Bill Dawson and the Chamber of Commerce for their interest in the medical community. Mr. Dawson told at a recent meeting of the Chamber of the need for more doctors in Nebraska City. The Chamber wants to get involved in the doctor search and is compiling information in preparation for such a program.

The need for more doctors in Nebraska City is felt by all. We all pledge to work for fill this void and do it with as much haste as possible.

The candidate

Douglas Bereuter, GOP candidate for Congress, has been a busy man. He arrived in Nebraska City the other evening to spend the night with the Hoch family.

He managed to get through part of the TV football game before retiring. He was up early to attend a breakfast meeting at Torino's then drove to Utica (the place with the big dance hall) for a filming session, then drove to Peru that evening for another appearance.

Tired? You bet, but he says he's enthused by the warm receptions.

The plant

The Airplane plant that graces my office window is getting out of control. It was a gift from "Pete & Repeat," our two paper stuffers, Mrs. Arthur Sackles and Mrs. George Golden, Jr. Mrs. Duffey watches it closely (I think she talks to it) and since Christmas, it's been growing like crazy.

Stop in and see for yourself.

The contest

The News-Press football contest sponsored by Nebraska City businesses has been attracting wide readership and nearly 200 entries each week.

The contest blank appears in the Monday paper each week listing games between schools in our area with a few extras tossed in just to keep the fans honest.

We've tried picking the winners (without the help of Harold Halm) and we don't fare so hot, so we are amazed each year at the people who are consistent winners or miss just a few.

They include Mrs. Jack Douglas, Mrs. Bob Jordan, Kent McGinnis, Jan Esser, Rick McCown, and Russ Sears of Exeter.

Vacation

This is being written several days ahead of time, so when you read this we will be boogeying in and around Los Angeles. It will be a brief trip, but long enough for the grandparents to put up with some visitors.

Our family is numbering fewer each year and this is the first trip without children. Our youngest is a senior and when you are a senior, it's pretty tough (they say) to leave volleyball and friends to Yuch sit in a car with dad for several days.

So, we are taking the mother-in-law on her first trip west. She promised to talk to me a lot so I won't get drowsy while driving. Snicker snicker.
