Open House is planned

The new school.

It was good news to read the other day that Mrs. Charles McElfresh and the PTA council are planning an open house at the new Hayward school on the site of the former Hayward Park.

The opening will be in November during National Education Week.

The bike-ride.

Congratulations to the Alpha Rho chapter membership for spearheading a bike ride as a benefit for St. Jude's Research Hospital in Memphis.

The riders earned $480 in pledges. The bide ride was started several years ago in Nebraska City and has been quite successful.

Mrs. David Blecha was chairman this year.

Coming up: Jaycee half-marathon October 1, Arbor Lodge State Park.

The vacation.

Our annual trip to Los Angeles was brief, but great. The grandparents are well and put up with us in good humor (Hope when I get that age I can be half as energetic.) We ate too much, slept too little and thoroughly enjoyed it.

On the way home, we stopped in Las Vegas . . . just for lunch. Millie still has the good luck moves.

Rescue call.

The Nebraska City and Falls City rescue squads have similar problems—lack of volunteers.

Bill Schock, editor of the Falls City Journal, said the other day the void must be filled. "Ask persons who have been in bad need of ambulance service. It is an organization this community cannot get along without."

Nebraska City's squad is going through a similar roster problem. In past years it took additional recruiting to handle the problem. Not so, with the doctor shortage, squadsmen say.

More people are being taken to the hospital and that requires three volunteers to report to the station for each call. To service the increased calls, squadsmen are setting up an "auxiliary" unit of volunteers who will handle all non-emergency calls.

Applications are being taken now by Chief Harold Rowe or may be sent to secretary Frank Bataillon at the rescue office in City Hall.

Congratulations.

. . . to Renee Wurtele, daughter of [illegible] Mrs. Don Wurtele, and Steve Nocita, son of Dr. S. J. Nocita, on their selection as queen and king at the NC Lourdes homecoming.

. . . also to Mrs. Jack Douglas and Coach Bill Grundman for an unusual event—tying for first place in the weekly football contest in the News-Press. They also had identical tie-breakers.

Football.

If you haven't attended an NCHS or Lourdes football game this season, you're missing some fine sport. And even more pleasing is the super nice evening weather, lots of seating at the new football field at NCHS, good lights and popcorn.

Lourdes won't be playing any more home games, but the Pioneers have several on the schedule.

It's pork time.

The News-Press needs your help to publish the annual pork supplement. Will you share your pork recipes? We'd like to give you a by-line and print your recipes in the special supplement.

One of the favorites Millie serves is rice and pork and that hot-hot sauce. Do you use caraway seed on pork dishes? Why?

Send your recipes to the News-Press 1978 Pork Edition, 123 So. 8th Street, Nebraska City, 68410.
